What are DNS Records?

DNS (Domain Name System) records are instructions that live in authoritative DNS servers and provide information about a domain including what IP address is associated with that domain and how to handle requests for that domain.

Common Record Types:

  • A
    Maps a domain to an IPv4 address (e.g., 192.0.2.1)
  • AAAA
    Maps a domain to an IPv6 address (e.g., 2001:db8::1)
  • CNAME
Creates an alias from one domain to another
  • MX
Specifies mail servers for the domain and their priority
  • TXT
Stores text information, often used for verification and SPF records
DNS Propagation

When you make changes to your DNS records, it can take time for those changes to propagate across the internet. This is due to DNS caching at various levels in the DNS hierarchy.

Propagation Factors:

  • TTL
Time To Live - determines how long records are cached by DNS resolvers
  • ISP Cache
Your internet provider may cache DNS records for performance
  • Browser Cache
Your browser may cache DNS resolutions to speed up browsing
  • Time
Propagation typically ranges from minutes to 48 hours depending on TTL values
